Travel is possible with an expectation of routine disruptions and delays. Political Instability - Moderate Risk
The United States is a liberal democratic state with a federal political structure characterised by a relatively high degree of political stability. However, the 2020 election culminated in a failed attempt by then-president Donald Trump's supporters to storm the US Capitol on 6 January 2021 to overturn his loss to then-president Joe Biden. President Trump returned to office in 2025 by vowing to reverse the Biden administration's policies and implement major immigration restrictions. Conflict - Low Risk
The US does not face any significant external threats. US military forces are engaged in counter-terrorism actions worldwide. Foreign military threats to the homeland are negligible. Terrorism - Medium Risk
There is a threat from both domestic and international terrorism to the United States. Islamic State (IS) and al-Qaeda have repeatedly warned of planned attacks on American soil and dozens of plots have been disrupted since the 11 September 2001 (9/11) attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C. Self-identified members of anti-government and white nationalist domestic extremist groups pose a growing risk as well. Unrest - Moderate Risk
In recent years, growing racial, social and economic issues have prompted widespread demonstrations, some of which have resulted in significant disruptions and closures. Anti-police violence protests in the summer of 2020 saw high levels of public participation; many of these ended in violence and looting. While the scale and scope of the 2020 summer unrest was uniquely compounded by tensions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, all local protests retain the potential to become sustained events with national impact due to partisan politics and intense media coverage. Crime - Moderate Risk
Crime rates in the United States (US) vary across states and territories. Foreigners are often targeted for petty crimes such as pickpocketing, particularly on public transport. Although violent crime committed by gangs and organised crime networks, including murder, is somewhat common, these rarely affect travellers and mainly target victims on the basis of perceived wealth. However, the risk of bystander injury in street shooting incidents across the country exists. Travellers can be exposed to property crime, vehicle crime, frauds and scams, as well as hate crimes. Natural and Environmental - Moderate Risk
Due to the sheer size and diversity of the United States, the country is affected by a wide range of natural hazards, which vary widely across the country from hurricanes in the coastal south and east and winter snow storms in northern region to tornadoes in the Midwest and south-eastern states and earthquake threats and seasonal wildfires along the West Coast. However, disaster management capabilities are of a very high standard. Health and Medical - Low Risk
A very high quality of medical services is available from both public and private hospitals across the country. There are an adequate number of medical facilities in urban and suburban areas that can cope with any treatable illness. However, healthcare is extremely expensive in the United States. Travel - Moderate Risk
Most of the country boasts excellent roads, well-maintained highways, well-connected, safe and reliable public transport and convenient facilities for travellers. Interstate and intercity travel is served by private passenger bus carriers, budget airlines and rail networks. Security at international airports is very tight, and foreign nationals requiring a visa will be interviewed, fingerprinted and digitally photographed upon entry. Protests in urban hubs have increasingly turned violent, posing a risk to bystanders. Although rates of crime and violence are higher in the US than other Western countries, incidents are often confined to economically deprived areas. Users of public transport that passes through these areas or downtown city centres hit particularly hard by the country's opioid crisis should remain cautious.
